What is research data?
Research data – recorded factual materials that are recognized by the scientific community as essential for evaluating the results of scientific research.
Research data can take various forms, such as:
Research data is categorized into two types:
1. Raw research data – data collected by research tool that has not been analyzed and processed that can be used for the purpose of a project/task.
2. Processed data – data that has been analyzed and processed for specific use.
Open research data is data that anyone can access. It can be reused, modified and redistributed. Sharing data is important because it allows other researchers to use it, as scientific research does not always require a dataset created specifically for a particular study.
Formal requirements for the deposit and sharing of research data
In 10th June 2019, European Parliament passed a Directive (EU) 2019/1024 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 on open data and the re-use of public sector information (recast). All European Union member states must ensure the ability for re-use of:
which in practice means that data created for scientific research, financed by public funds, must be made available to re-use for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.
The directive is implemented through the law of 11th August 2021 on open data access and re-use of public information, which specifies the rules of open research data and availability of public sector information.
Polish Platform of Medical Research is a central system for registering and archiving the scientific and educational work of our University’s employees, PhD students, and students. It allows for the archiving and sharing of publications and datasets in public access.
